July 16th

John F. Kennedy Jr. crashed the Piper Saratoga in the Atlantic Ocean while flying his sister-in-law, Lauren G. Bessette, to Martha's Vineyard. He and his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, were supposed to attend one of Kennedy's cousins' (Rory Kennedy) wedding the following day. Their bodies were found nearly a week later at the bottom of the ocean, only seven miles southwest of Martha's Vineyard.

March 20th

The Breitling balloon, piloted by Brian Jones and Bertrand Piccard successfully lands after becoming the first balloon to fly nonstop around the world. It took the balloon 19 days!

August 17th

A 7.6 Earthquake strikes in northwest Turkey, killing 14,000
