February 11th
Pope Benedict XVI announces his resignation. Benedict decided to resign because of health issues. He sustained that his physical and mental strength would soon give out, and that he did not want to be an incapable Pope. He is the first Pope to resign in almost 600 years. Pope Celestine V and Pope Gregory XII were the only other Popes to ever resign, and they did so in 1294 and 1415 respectively.
March 13th
Jorge Mario Bergoglio is elected as the new Pope and takes on the name of Francis.
June 5th
Edward Snowden leaks the first article of many. They are classified NSA documents revieling that the NSA is survailing Verizon customers' phone conversations.
July 12th
Malala addresses the UN touching on the subject of education for girls, which she strongly supports.
