On a normal day of oil drilling, a BP pipe was discovered to be leaking when it was too late. Approximately 3.19 million barrels of oil were spilt into the Gulf of Mexico. The incident killed 11 workers and injured 17 others. The pipe was capped in July, 87 days after the incident occurred. It took three years to restore the Gulf and its 16,000 miles of beaches to normal.

Prince William of England proposes to Kate Middleton. She accepts and they are engaged.

The Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland begins erupting, disrupting flights into and out of Europe.

When the Eyjafjallajökull began errupting, my family became worried for we might not have been able to take our trip to visit family here in the U.S.
