The Global Financial Crisis that started with the real estate market collapsing in the United States in 2007 continues throughout part of 2008. It spread around the rest of the world during 2008. It was the economy's most dangerous crisis since the Great Depression in the 1930s. The entire crisis was caused by mortgage dealers in the U.S. dealing unfavorable negotiations with borrowers.

Barack Obama is elected President of the United States. He is the first African-American President to be elected.

The conncept of an African-American President did not make sense to me at first. I did not understand why the American media was making such a big deal about it, but of course, I was still living in Italy and racism is handled differently there.
