A cease-fire is declared after a peace agreement was signed between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers rebels. The cease-fire marked a pause in a 19 year civil war between the government and the rebels.

On this day, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother dies at the age of 102. She had been Duchess of York from 1923 to 1936, Queen Consort from 1936 to 1952, and Queen Mother from 1952 until her death in 2002.
